The Sinking of Roadside Rest...

Postby Lavelia » Thu Jun 01, 2017 2:13 pm

With a final smack of the axe into the large tree, it falls to the ground in a very loud, snapping and cracking, thud. More trees join the first one as it lays on the ground. A pile of six of the largest and oldest trees in this section of the forest now lay blocking the path coming down from the north, but the loggers don’t care. They’re here to do a job, after all. They kept working...right up until the Head Foreman came thundering up to them shrieking out, “What the hell are you idiots doin’?? We gotta use that path you dumbasses!”

The twins glanced at each other, shrugged, and stated in unison, “Sorry boss. But you told us ta do a job and we’re doin’ our job. We’re clearing out this forest nice and quick, just like ya wanted us to….” he broke off as he noticed that water was rising pretty quickly, “uhh boss? I think we got a problem,” he pointed down towards his boots, which were now sitting in about three inches of water.

The Head Foreman sighed and shook his head even as he looked down, “what now…?” The ground began shaking and he pointed, shouting over his shoulder as he raced to the other loggers, “move it! This isn't safe. Get to the camp!”

The twins nodded and started running. Already water was up to the middle of their calves, slowing them down, causing them to stumble. The trees blocking the path to the north were forgotten in their haste.

The Head Foreman got the rest of his men rounded up and moving towards the logging camp. The water, now, was thigh deep, and there was much sloshing by many of his men as they all worked their way towards the camp. One went down into a deep, water-filled hole, only to be grabbed and hauled back up by a couple of the Operators. He wasn't sure but...it seemed as though the ground was sinking bit by bit as they moved. The water did do one thing for them. It helped to keep them stable as they raced forward towards the camp. It sloshed violently around them, soaking them all to the bone, but its very nature kept them from being thrown about by the violent quakes.

One by one they climbed out of the ever deepening water and onto the shore near where the creek met solid, dry, ground. The men continued, racing through the lumber mill and towards their lounge. The Head Foreman paused for a few minutes to stare out towards where Roadside Rest once was. It no longer looked the same and the trees that had stood so high up into the sky now had water nearly halfway up their massive trunks. There would be no more clear cutting in that section. The water had been nearly up to his chest by the time he made it to the creek. Now, as the trees continued to sink, it could only be even deeper. Heaving a sigh, he shook his head, turned, and began making his way to the logger’s lounge, calling all his men to join him for a while...or at least until all the bloody shaking stopped so they could all just get back to work and try and forget this weirdness ever happened.
