I know Lateralus mentioned something about having people be helpers. What I was thinking for this idea is after the new player tutorial give them the option to flag themselves as needing help and the online helpers are notified of this. Then that helper answers any questions and actually works with them on learning the game so they better understand the world.
I know it is hard to start a new game where you don't know anyone so I figured at least this would give them the knowledge to play the game properly as well as get them social interaction if they need it.
Please discuss.

Re: Helper Mode
I think the flagging is a great idea!
Re: Helper Mode
This is not a bad idea. I really like this one 8)
Re: Helper Mode
I like this idea, but do we want to rely on a new player to figure out how to flag themselves?
Maybe it's an option in the create character screen, checked by default on first character?
"[x] I'm a new player and would like assistance learning the game."

Re: Helper Mode
Maybe we can make it so that everyone has the box defaulted on their first character and they are added to a New Players Alliance which staff members will lead and help the characters figure out how to play our game. They can leave the clan at any time if they feel they are ready to adventure out into the world on their own.
Re: Helper Mode
Continuing the idea (in conjunction with the helper turorial).
In the account login character creation screen, add to the new to the game box a link.
It could be a link to a beginners guide (that you have access to in game as well), with tips on character creation (general builds).
It could have first steps kind of thing; Go to the shops, buy gear, temples recharge your hp/mp faster. Food/water gives you regen for hp/mp as long as you stand still and are not attacked/attacking. etc etc.

Disclaimer: Any ideas I come up with may not even meet my approval. I am just posting an idea based on the topic I have just read.

Re: Helper Mode
I concur with the flag idea. We should really make this game as easy as possible for new players so they stick around.

Re: Helper Mode
Sorry to necro but I thought it would be better than a new thread.
I think by default new characters could be flagged newbie and it's up to people to turn it off. If people abuse it, they are idiots.
I have a few suggestions related to this:
I am still semi-active on topmudsites, mudconnector and the MUD subreddit (mostly reddit these days, the other two are pretty dead) and there are still a lot of players looking for some nostalgia and searching for an accessible MUD to play. Many gravitate to Achaea because it has a pretty web client with a map. EO has all the graphical stuff going for it, is much easier to learn than Achaea and is not pay to win. The big risk is that new players will come and won't get to meet people. We are going to be lucky to get 50 people online once the game is rolling, so we need to make sure that new players are being welcomed and engaged into the game.

- Has there been discussion about adding a newbie tutorial? I think something similar to what most other MUDs have would do; short and snappy but could introduce players to a lot of stuff. Ten rooms or so, after which you are warped to the basement where players currently start. Some basic stuff about moving, equiping, casting, stamina, the map, quests, chat commands, shops, death and its consequences. This is particularly important because MUD players will come here using commands like /tell. /kill, /list and /help. It's obvious to the old RoK players what to do but the simplicity will trip a lot of players up.
- The newbie flag could really just add them to a newbie chat channel. Identified helpers could be on to give people a hand. Really important these are friendly people, no griefing or attitudes. Newbies could be automatically booted from the channel at level 15.
- On a related note, has there been any talk about help files being available within the game? I know RoK didn't have them but I really think this would be a worthwhile thing. Technical things like commands, classes, races could be added; but also the game lore, history.

Re: Helper Mode
I agree, I was aiming to add this and the help commands going already.
There is a tutorial coming yeah, it probably won't be out for release but will be sooner than later.
